action

The former police headquarters in Hamburg

The spirit of Dr. Mabuse has taken complete possession of the neurologist Professor Pohland. Under the compulsion of the sinister criminal, the scientist continues the work of spreading chaos and terror. At the Hamburg police headquarters, Inspector Vulpius is busy reconstructing the remains of Dr. Mabuse, when these are irretrievably destroyed by an attack.

A short time later, Pohland alias Mabuse derailed a train in order to free the English prisoner George Cockstone. The former doctor was dishonorably discharged from the British occupation army and sentenced to five years in prison for negligent homicide and other offenses. After his appearance has been completely changed operationally, he sneaks the trust of Professor Laurentz on Pohland's order and becomes his assistant. The Hamburg scientist has developed a device with which one can impose a will on another person . Inspector Vulpius, who is busy with the escape from Cockstone, is now in contact with Major Bill Tern of Scotland Yard , who was assigned the case at the time and who is traveling to Hamburg without further ado.

Meanwhile, Professor Laurentz falls victim to his own invention when Cockstone and his accomplice Ernest Hyliard use the device to hypnotize a postman and force him to commit a gruesome murder of the scientist. Bill Tern, who has since returned to London , receives a tip from his mother that there is a connection between the murdered scientist and the missing Cockstone. Again he makes his way to Hamburg to see Inspector Vulpius. When the two go to the professor's laboratory, there is an explosion there. At the scene of the crime, the investigators find a body burned beyond recognition with the Cockstone papers. The dead person is reported as a plastic surgeon Dr. Whiteman identified.

On behalf of Professor Pohland, the important parts of the laboratory were smuggled to England in good time, where the scientist, in the spirit of Dr. Mabuse, is working on the further development of the apparatus. Cockstone and Hyliard hypnotize Princess Diana's fiancé because gemstones are needed to make other devices. He steals a valuable necklace against his will and even hands it into the hands of the criminals. Bill Tern wants to ask the physicist Professor Masterson for help for his research, but finds only his body on his estate in Doncaster . Masterson died because he was in possession of an invention that would render the control devices ineffective.

Soon, Pohland / Mabuse can actually bring several people under his command, including Sir Robert Allingham, Inspector Joe Rank and two helicopter pilots who mislead Bill Tern. But both Bill Tern's mother and Inspector Vulpius are immune to electronic volition. Tern finds out that both of them wear a hearing aid that protects against Mabuse's equipment. At the last moment, Vulpius and Tern can prevent a coup and arrest the criminals, including Professor Pohland. But Pohland seems abandoned again by Mabuse's mind and knows nothing.

The filming of Scotland Yard is chasing after Dr. Mabuse, began shortly before the mail train robbery in England. This film already outlined a sequence of events, very similar to what actually happened before the premiere at Ledburn.

History of origin

prehistory

Film producer Artur Brauner

With the Dr. Mabuse film series started in 1960, the film producer Artur Brauner had created a successful and successful counterpart to the Edgar Wallace crime novels of the competition. First of all, both film series were brought to the cinemas by Constantin Filmverleih , so that the advertising and the start dates could be coordinated.

After the fourth Mabuse film The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1962) could not meet the box office expectations, Constantin Verleih refused to market further films in the series. The Gloria Film Distribution, which was supposed to include the last two Dr. Mabuse films of the 1960s in its program, was all the more grateful.

Due to the restriction to the title character Dr. Mabuse and the fact that crime films continued to promise enormous success, Brauner also produced the Bryan Edgar Wallace film series for Gloria Filmverleih since 1962 . The son of the well-known writer Edgar Wallace , born in 1904, had already written several novels himself, most of which dealt with science fiction and plans for world domination .

Pre-production and script

The screenplay came from Ladislas Fodor , who has already worked for three Mabuse films and the Bryan Edgar Wallace film Der Würger von Schloss Blackmoor . This time he combined both series of films by portraying the criminal from Wallace's novel The World is at Stake through the criminal character Dr. Mabuse replaced. The film project was initially called The Scarlet Junk , later the title Der Todesspiegel des Dr. Mabuse , Dr. Mabuse keeps London in suspense and ultimately Scotland Yard is chasing Dr. Mabuse .

Paul May could be engaged as a director . For the second time after The 1000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse was seen in the leading role of Peter van Eyck . Even Werner Peters , Walter Rilla and Albert Bessler worked with the series in previous films. Other guest roles have included Sabine Bethmann , Dieter Borsche , Wolfgang Lukschy , Klaus Kinski , Agnes Windeck , Hans Nielsen and Albrecht Schoenhals . By Wolfgang Preiss , the all-Mabuse films played the title character since 1960, there are only impressions of a former Mabuse film.

The shooting took place from June 19, 1963 to August 1963 in Hamburg and West Berlin . The studio recordings were shot in the CCC-Film studios in Berlin-Haselhorst . Hanns H. Kuhnert and Albrecht Hennings were hired as film architects . Production manager was Heinz Willeg .

In contrast to the previous three films, in which the location is anonymous, this time the action takes place in Hamburg and London . Nevertheless, some exterior shots were taken at less known locations in West Berlin , which had to portray Hamburg or London accordingly.

The following locations can be seen in the film:

The film also contains some London shots, in which, however, no actors took part.

reception

publication

The FSK released the film on September 18, 1963 for people aged 16 and over. With the work, which premiered two days later, director Paul May has succeeded in making a passable and business-worthy crime film. Spurred on by the success, Artur Brauner planned further Bryan Edgar Wallace films such as The Executioner of London (1963) or The Phantom of Soho (1964) as well as sequels to the Dr. Mabuse series, of which only The Death Rays of the Dr. Mabuse (1964) should be realized. Both series were temporarily discontinued in 1964.

Reviews

"A not so utopian fable, pretty exciting."

- Paimann's film lists , December 1963

"Because of the many motifs that are already all too well-known for the genre, not particularly exciting entertainment."

“Years of film wear and tear have only allowed Mabuse's spirit to survive. It now haunts the brain of an insane doctor and drives him to the most extreme crimes. A murderous tool is a kind of camera, the victims of which, like London's chief of police, are subjected to the will of evil. The large-scale lightning shootout could have been a good joke, but it is bad and real crime. There is no electronic creep. For this, the mail train robbery in England is offered in short. With Peter van Eyck, Sabine Bethmann, the effective masks Walter Rilla, Dieter Borsche, Klaus Kinski and Agnes Windeck in the amusing role of mother. "

- Hamburger Abendblatt , January 1964

"Conventionally and uninspiredly staged, undecidedly between the crime fiction scheme and science fiction thriller, which sometimes slips into silly."

"'Scotland Yard is chasing Dr. Mabuse 'is entertaining, funny and exciting. Only a few unbelievable scenes take your nerves, otherwise Peter van Eyck as the inspector and Agnes Windeck as his mother are great fun. "

- Moviesection.de

"The story, which is based on the novel" The Device "by Bryan Edgar Wallace, is quite thin and not really compelling."
