Film production management

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Line producer ( English line producer ) are commercial director in the film and television production. As a rule, they have a total financial budget that - divided into individual budgets - is available for various different program projects. The individual projects are each the responsibility of the production manager or executive producer . A production manager is therefore subordinate to one or more production managers.

description

Production managers are predominantly found in permanent employment at a television company, production company or group. Production managers, on the other hand, are mostly found among freelancers. The English term " Executive Producer ", which is occasionally used in production management, refers to production managers who, due to contractual features (mostly through financial participation), have a say in programming issues. This constellation is unusual in Germany, but the term is sometimes used for reasons of prestige and, in fact, completely without reason. For the same reason, simple production managers are occasionally given the title “production manager” without the corresponding competencies or skills being associated with it.

The English term "Line Producer" means that the decision-making authority of a production manager moves in a higher-level corporate area (above the line), while the responsibilities of the production managers subordinate to it remain exclusively limited to individual production projects (below the line) Usually with full responsibility for planning, calculation and execution of a production. Production managers only intervene in the production process of an individual project in exceptional cases. The role of production management has recently been severely restricted in Germany. In some cases, the production manager hands the project over to the producer after filming is complete, even if the editing and post-production for image and sound can be extremely costly.

Fundraising, applications for film funding

Very often, in addition to their control function, production managers are also active in the procurement of film subsidies, project financing, the organization of sales and exploitation activities as well as in order acquisition.

Professional requirements

Production managers come from the profession of “production manager” and have the same basic commercial requirements. A business degree or corresponding subsequent training measures are not mandatory, but an advantage. In addition, there is a high degree of experience and the gift of being not only project-oriented, but also operational-oriented.
