Alf Teichs (born December 18, 1904 in Dresden , † January 14, 1992 in Heidelberg ) was a German film producer .

Life

The son of the teacher Eugen Teich and his wife Gertrud, née Fahnert, graduated from the König-Georg-Gymnasium in Dresden. He took acting lessons from Erich Ponto and from 1924 studied German, art history and philosophy in Leipzig. In 1925 he continued his studies in Freiburg, in 1926 in Vienna and finished it in Leipzig in 1928. He began working as an assistant director and dramaturge at the Old Theater in Leipzig. In 1928 he became chief dramaturge and actor at the National Theater Weimar . He was also Secretary General of the Thuringian State Theaters. In 1929 he made his debut as a theater director at the Kurtheater Bad Pyrmont with the performance of Iphigenie auf Tauris . In 1930 he married the daughter of the Chemnitz printer, Maria Zimmermann.

In 1931 his contract was terminated. Teichs now directed the Thomas Müntzer Festival at the open-air theater in Bad Frankenhausen and was dramaturge at the Münchner Kammerspiele in the 1931/32 season . In 1932/33 he worked as a director in Potsdam and as a dramaturge at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin.

In 1933 he wrote the short stories The Painter of Saints and the Dalmatian Novelle . In 1934 he became chief dramaturge in the theater department of the Berlin Drei-Masken-Verlag and worked as a translator. He divorced his Jewish wife in 1934, but continued to live with her.

Teichs, who had already established contacts with the film industry as a screenwriter and assistant director, was hired as chief dramaturge at Terra Film AG in 1935 . Teichs stayed with Terra when it was made a state-mediated company in 1937 under the name Terra-Filmkunst GmbH.

In November 1940, Teichs was promoted to head of production at Terra. Under Teich's direction, Terra-Film mainly produced typical entertainment films during the Second World War. In the 1950 compilation film Herrliche Zeiten , Teichs said in retrospect that he never wanted to make films that glorified this era.

In the summer of 1945 he founded the Demo-Film GmbH Berlin together with Werner Hochbaum and Graf Treuberg and married Maria Zimmermann for the second time. With Heinz Rühmann , he founded Comedia-Film GmbH in Berlin and Munich in 1947.

In 1952 he moved to Neue Film Verleih GmbH in Munich as chief dramaturge, and in the summer of 1955 to Deutsche London Filmverleih GmbH in Hamburg. In 1956 he married the actress Katharina Mayberg . In 1957 he became head of production at Deutsche Film Hansa GmbH. Teichs mainly produced comedies and homeland films, but also works that dealt with the immediate German past such as It happened on July 20 and Die Brücke .

From 1963, Teichs was in charge of setting up the television department at the Deutsche Buchgemeinschaft Darmstadt. In 1969 he became an independent television producer with his Ursina Film- und Fernsehproduktion GmbH Hamburg. From 1975 he worked as production manager for Albis Film- und Fernsehproduktion GmbH. In 1979 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1981 he received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon.
