Since her husband Martin was drafted in the Second World War and was taken prisoner by the Soviets in 1945, Irene Besser had to cope with her life and that of her daughter Lotte in western Germany in the 1940s and 1950s on her own. With a lot of commitment and hard work, she used the economic boom and set up her own department store. At her side is the lawyer Dr. Werther, who became more and more of a family friend over the years. For twelve long years, Irene's husband was thought to be missing, then the life of everyone involved changes suddenly from one day to the next.

Because Martin Besser is back in Germany. The country has become alien to him, and the first thing the late returnee wants to see is his wife again. In his hometown he befriends the young Franziska von Stein. When Martin and Irene meet again, instead of great joy, there is distance and alienation between the couple, which even intensifies at the moment when Besser realizes that his wife has not only become a very successful business woman, but also no longer privately free is. Irene wants to do justice to her husband as well as her lover and to reconcile her two lives, the present and the former. But in the end she has to make a decision: Irene Besser wants to divorce Martin, but wait so long to take this step until her husband has regained his footing and has built his own future without her.

Production notes

Ms. Irene Besser was created in 1960 based on the revue novel of the same name by John Richler, a pseudonym of Hans Habes , on behalf of Hübler-Kahla Filmgesellschaft mbH under the direction of chief dramaturge Alf Teichs . Allegedly, the film roles are said to have been awarded according to suggestions from the "Revue" readers. The film had its world premiere on February 16, 1961 in Mannheim . On March 15, 1969, Ms. Irene Besser was broadcast on television for the first time in the late-night program of ZDF .

For the 30s and 40s screen star Luise Ullrich, Ms. Irene Besser and the colportage melodrama Die Schatten, which was filmed immediately afterwards , heralded the end of her film career. The film's large personal lexicon writes about the assessment of her role orientation during the Adenauer years: “Luise Ullrich's post-war roles were mostly the good mothers and neglected wives, but also decision-makers who took responsibility, who, with their hearts in the right place, were brave for their ideals and economic issues Fight family survival. The sober, solid pragmatism lived out in their play often prevented the overly sentimental themes of the scripts from slipping into pure sentimentality. After her title role as a department store manager in Ms. Irene Besser and the role of a home manager for difficult-to-educate girls in Die Shadows become longer , Luise Ullrich withdrew from film in 1961. "

For producer JA Hübler-Kahla this was the last film; at the end of 1960 he retired into private life. During the shooting, the contributors Peer Schmidt and Helga Schlack got to know each other and became a couple. They married in January 1966. Max Mellin designed the film .

Reviews

"Sentimental, routinely staged illustrated drama garnished with false images of time."

““ Illustrated ”fate of late returnees in the economic wonderland. Well-groomed pseudo-problem conversation, with stronger restrictions because of the superficial marital conflicts, possible for adults. "
