Peer Schmidt
Peer Eugen Georg Schmidt (born March 11, 1926 in Erfurt ; † May 8, 2010 in Berlin ) was a German actor , dubbing and radio play speaker .
Life
Schmidt's father was a painter . Growing up in his hometown of Erfurt and later in Berlin, Peer Schmidt took acting lessons there, which he had to break off due to being called up for military service during the Second World War . After 1945 he played on various stages in Germany, including in Düsseldorf with Gustaf Gründgens , but also in Zurich , Frankfurt am Main and Munich .
He didn't find the film until 1953, in the strip War of Love after Notes alongside Johannes Heesters . It was more of a supporting role that made him known to a larger audience. His roles were good-natured, upright, a little naive, sometimes dreamy and clumsy men and adventurers. In the film Confessions of the Conjurer Felix Krull after Thomas Mann he was the bon vivant Marquis de Venosta, whose identity Krull takes on. He had another notable appearance in 1969 in the international production Monte Carlo Rallye alongside Gert Fröbe and Tony Curtis .
From the 1960s onwards he also worked intensively as a voice actor. In addition to Gérard Philipe (among others in Die Kartause von Parma ), he also lent his unmistakable voice to Marlon Brando ( Endstation Sehnsucht ), Rod Taylor ( The Time Machine ) and, between 1959 and 1975, mainly Jean-Paul Belmondo (among others in Out of breath or Cartouche, the Bandit ).
At the same time, he sometimes played in television productions. He took on leading roles in The Little Doctor (1974) based on stories by Georges Simenon and in Café Wernicke (1978).
Since the end of the 1940s he has been working extensively as a radio play speaker, including at the NWDR Cologne , whose legal successor is the WDR and the West Berlin broadcaster RIAS . Here he was mainly heard in leading roles.
However, Schmidt saw the theater as his acting home throughout his life. His in-house stages were the Berlin boulevard theater and comedy on Kurfürstendamm .
From 1966 until his death he was married to the actress Helga Schlack . Schmidt lived with his wife alternately in Berlin and on the North Sea island of Amrum . He died in a Berlin clinic.
