Rosemary Sutcliff

Rosemary Sutcliff , CBE (born December 14, 1920 in East Clandon , Surrey , † July 23, 1992 in Arundel , Sussex ) was an English writer . She was best known for her youth books about the Roman occupation of Britain.

Life

Rosemary Sutcliff was born in Surrey, England in 1920. Her father was an officer in the British Navy. As a little girl, Sutcliff developed a severe arthritic disease known as Still's disease . Because she spent most of her life in a wheelchair, she was unable to attend school regularly. During this time, due to her restricted freedom of movement (she had to lie on her back the whole time), her power of observation and her eye for details became apparent, which she would later use for her stories. In addition, her mother read her many Greek and Roman sagas and tales as well as stories by authors such as Charles Dickens , William Makepeace Thackeray and Anthony Trollope .

At the age of 14 she switched to an art school and initially devoted herself to painting miniatures. Later she shifted her work to writing because she could "tell" a much larger and more complex story than with her pictures. In 1950, her first own works were published with a Robin Hood adaptation The Chronicles of Robin Hood and the children's book The Queen's Story .

Typical of her books is a great deal of expertise (she had dealt intensively with historical studies) and the symbolic connection of secondary details (weather, minor events) with relevant things that are important for the plot.

Her best-known work, The Eagle of the Ninth Legion , was set to music as an audio book and was the basis of a six-part BBC series of the same name filmed in 1977 and the 2011 film The Eagle of the Ninth Legion . She was awarded the Carnegie Medal for her literary work . In 1975 Sutcliff was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II "as an ingenious and uncompromising chronicler" . In 1992 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire . In addition, books by her have been on the shortlist for the German Youth Literature Prize several times .

Rosemary Sutcliff died in 1992 while working on her last work Sword Song ; she has written more than 40 novels for young people and adults.
