William Makepeace Thackeray (/ ˈθækəri /; * July 18, 1811 in Calcutta , India , † December 24, 1863 in London ) was a British writer and, along with Charles Dickens and George Eliot, is considered the most important English-language novelist of the Victorian era .

Life

Thackeray was born in India as the only child of the colonial official Richmond Thackeray . In 1815 his father died. His mother's name was Anne Becher. He himself was the great-grandson of Thomas Thackeray, a director of the Harrow School . Thackeray was sent to boarding schools in England in 1817. So he got to know the English school system at the Charterhouse School , which he later vividly described in the Christmas story Doctor Birch and his young friends and in various of his larger works. In 1829/30 he studied at Trinity College in Cambridge , but left it without a degree and went to London. The following year he went on a trip to the European continent and visited France and Italy as well as Germany , where he met Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in Weimar . In 1831/32 he studied law in London. In 1833 he lost his inherited wealth and went to Paris to Art to study. In 1836 he married the Irish Isabella Shawe in Paris. The marriage produced three daughters, including Anne Thackeray Ritchie , who herself became a writer.

In the same year Thackeray's first article appeared in the newspaper " The Constitutional " founded by his stepfather , a paper with a liberal stance, which however died again after a year. In 1837 he returned to London and began working as a journalist. His first book appeared in England in 1840. Thackeray's wife suffered a nervous breakdown that year and ended up in a mental institution. In 1844 he made a trip to the Mediterranean and the Middle East . The publication of his literary masterpiece Vanity Fair (German: Fair of Vanity ) in 1847/48 finally made him a respected author and also brought him material prosperity. His high social standing was also reflected in his membership in four of the most prestigious British clubs , namely the Athenaeum , Travelers , Garrick and the Reform Club .
