action

In Hamburg, the ex-captain Jonny Jensen runs the bar "Das Herz von St. Pauli". Business is not going well, however, popular with the regulars he entertains with the accordion - Jensen already owes the tax office 6,000 DM. His son Hein urges him to win "Jabo" Jabowski as a business partner. Jabowski has Hein in hand, because he smuggled goods stolen for him into Denmark. Hein convinces his father to accept Jabowski's offer.

Hein's brother Fiete is the chief sergeant in the Hamburg police force. He thinks he recognizes Jabowski's partner, Tanne, but cannot classify him.

In fact, Jabowski plans to use the pub's rum cellar as a transshipment point for smuggled goods. He takes 17-year-old hitchhiker Helga Neumann with him on a car trip and promises her a job in the “heart of St. Pauli”.

Meanwhile, Tine Jensen tries to get her friend Harry Pingel to finally propose to her. His bourgeois parents, who run a furniture factory, don't want to know anything about a wedding between him and the daughter of an innkeeper.

After the renovation, Captain Jensen discovered that Jabowski had turned the bar into a nightclub, in which he wanted Jensen to perform as the “last popular singer from St. Pauli”. At first he refuses, but his family persuades him to go on stage. In fact, his performance is a great success, but Jensen feels sold. His daughter Tine is also unhappy, because that evening, of all times, her boyfriend Harry and his parents visit the restaurant. His mother in particular is anything but enthusiastic about the scantily clad girls on stage.

Meanwhile, Jabowski tries to get Helga around, but she does not accept his offer, whereupon he dismisses her. In tears she tells the story of Trudchen Meyer, Jensen's friend. Jensen makes it clear to Jabowski that under no circumstances will Helga lose her job just because she refuses to sleep with her boss. Helga is housed with the Jensens.

Mia, Jabowski's lover, has found out that Helga is only 17 and is therefore not yet allowed to work in a nightclub. In her jealousy of the young woman, she gives the police a tip.

The next day, at the request of his daughter, Jensen goes on a day trip to Helgoland. He quickly finds out the reason for this: There are members of the Association of German Furniture Manufacturers on board - including the Pingel family. Since he is wearing his old uniform, he is mistaken for the captain. Mother Pingel, who left the bar the night before, before Jensen made his appearance, is enthusiastic about him. Now nothing stands in the way of Tine and Harry's wedding.

In the meantime, Tanne has robbed a jewelry store in Bremen with some hired burglars. The booty is hidden in rum barrels in the basement of the bar.

Fiete investigates the tip that a minor is employed in the bar. Jabowski now claims to have fired Helga because she was not yet 18 years old and Jensen would have ignored this. Fiete asks Helga to leave the bar. There is an argument between him and Hein, who is now with Helga. Jensen arrives just in time to prevent a fight. He confronts Hein, who confesses to him that three years earlier he had brought a package with stolen watches to Copenhagen. Jensen throws him out of the house, disappointed and angry at his son.

Hein moves into a cheap dump with Helga, but since he has no money, he wants to take on the freighter "Orion". But the police followed the trail of the stolen jewelry to Hamburg. Fiete recognizes one of the suspects in a photo, he had seen him with Tanne. The police then searched the cellar of the restaurant and found the booty they were looking for. When Hein learns that his father is to be placed under arrest as an accomplice, he turns himself in to the police and unpacks through Jabowski. He has gone into hiding with his accomplices and wants to cross the border with a forged passport. When he tries to escape with a launch, Jensen sneaks on board and overwhelms him.

Reviews

  • The film service saw in Das Herz von St. Pauli an entertainment film with a simple crime story and only described some of the outdoor shots as "atmospheric". Otherwise, it is a rather clumsy attempt to catch the audience through the star image of Hans Albers and borrowings from the film Große Freiheit No. 7 .
