action

Vienna in the 1950s. The successful composer Alexander Marhold is looking forward to his 50th birthday. He is determined to step in front of the altar for the fourth time in the near future to legalize the relationship with his secretary Heidi. But he is still married and lives with his wife Beate under one roof. Unexpectedly, he receives a visit from his childhood friend, Ministerialrat Windberger from the Foreign Ministry. He announced that he would be awarded the Austrian Peace Medal on his birthday for his composition “Die Waffen Nieder”. For this event he should give a banquet for 24 people in his villa. Little does Marhold suspect that Windberger has also invited his two sons from his first and second marriage: Sascha, who now lives in Moscow and has a high-ranking Soviet functionary as a stepfather, and Bobby, the stepson of the extremely wealthy American industrialist Bullit. The Austrian Foreign Ministry wants to use the presence of the young men to enter into negotiations for the acquisition of a terrestrial satellite .

The two sons of the jubilee bring the atmosphere of their countries of origin to the birthday party : Sascha as a continuously serious-looking Russian who never ceases to praise the advantages of his new home, and Bobby as a casual, cheerful American. It doesn't take long before the two start flirting with the composer's pretty wife. This even goes so far that every Beate makes a marriage proposal after it has become known that the birthday boy is planning to marry his secretary soon. But the longer the landlord has to watch his sons strive for the favor of his still-wife, the more jealous he becomes. Finally he becomes aware of what he has about her; he discards his third marriage plan and ensures that Heidi and the Ministerialrat become a couple.

The diplomatic ulterior motives also come true: By mistaking a briefcase for important secret documents and Windberger's negotiating skills, the Austrian state is given the prospect of leasing a terrestrial satellite, which the Russians will supply and the Americans will finance. Sascha and Bobby leave the Alpine republic as friends, and the Ministerialrat is promoted to ambassador for his services.
