Heinz Dieter Koehler

Heinz Dieter Köhler (born February 22, 1926 in Cologne ; † March 26, 2019 in Gummersbach ) was a German theater and radio play director .

Life

After studying ethnology , sociology and theater studies at the University of Cologne , Heinz Dieter Köhler worked from 1953 as an assistant director at what was then Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne. He learned his trade from well-known directors such as Ludwig Cremer , Raoul Wolfgang Schnell and Wilhelm Semmelroth . In 1959 Köhler got a permanent position at Westdeutscher Rundfunk and was responsible for a large number of productions until his retirement in 1991. One of his best-known works is the 1980 radio play version of JRR Tolkien's novel The Little Hobbit with well-known speakers such as Martin Benrath , Horst Bollmann , Bernhard Minetti and Jürgen von Manger .

From 1969 to 1976, Köhler was also head of the Rhenish editorial department at WDR and, in addition to his work as a radio play director, occasionally staged at theaters in Aachen and Dortmund as well as at the Mayen Castle Festival .

Heinz Dieter Köhler lived in Königswinter and died in Gummersbach at the end of March 2019. He was buried on April 18, 2019 in the cemetery in Troisdorf-Bergheim .
