The impossibility of emancipation is the subject of Erika , the first play by Ursula Krechel, with which she drew attention in 1974. The action, set in the milieu of the Rhenish petty bourgeoisie, depicts the young woman's attempt to break out of a world that was perceived as oppressive, a constricting marriage and professional hopelessness, which was finally broken off. It was premiered in the Landestheater Castrop-Rauxel. In 1976 Luchterhand published the book Self Experience and Foreign Determination. Report from the new women's movement , in which she defines the political and social position of the women's movement since 1968. The book had numerous editions by 1983.
In 2008 and 2012 two novels were particularly popular, both of which deal with exile. In the novel Shanghai far from where , published in 2008, she describes the fate of some of the eighteen thousand Jews who have been able to use one of the last visa-free loopholes since 1938 and thus survive in the distant, strange Shanghai ghetto . The novel also traces the return of exiles to Germany after the Second World War and shows the ruthlessness with which the returnees were dealt with ex officio.
Krechel's novel Landgericht , published in 2012, received the German Book Prize . The focus of the novel is the Jewish judge Dr. Richard Kornitzer, who returned to Germany from exile in Havana in 1947 to his scattered family "and broke up when he lost the struggle to restore his dignity in the narrowness of post-war Germany". The real role model for this fictional character is the judge Robert Michaelis . 2017 appeared in Germany under the title Landgericht. Story of a Family a two-part television adaptation with Ronald Zehrfeld and Johanna Wokalek in the leading roles. In the context of the description of Kornitzer's exile in Havana, the district court also contains a haunting description of the German-speaking exile community that exists there. Its members, portrayed by Krechel, include, for example, Fritz Lamm , Hans and Lisa Fittko , Emma Kann , Julius Deutsch and Boris Goldenberg .
Together with the novel Geisterbahn , published in 2018, this resulted in a trilogy of the excluded, also a story of displacement from the early Federal Republic. The novel covers almost 100 years of German history in a panorama from Ursula Krechel's hometown Trier. The focus is on a Sinti family.
