Venue

Integrated into the medieval city fortifications, the Genovevaburg rises above the market square on the southwest side of the city. Every year in the inner courtyard of the castle there is a family play, a play and a musical production on the program. The grandstand offers space for 492 spectators. The small stage of the festival is located in the old prison. There are small theater productions on the program here. The seating of the bistro in the inner courtyard offers space for 100 spectators.

history

In 1980 the Genovevaburg became a stage for one week on the occasion of its 700th anniversary. The performance of the Genovevasage at the foot of the castle thrilled the Mayen population and visitors, so it was decided to make the castle festival a permanent fixture. In 1982, the inner courtyard of the castle became a backdrop for everyone and Sleeping Beauty for the first time . In the following, guest performances by the Landesbühne Rheinland-Pfalz and other festival cities determined the program. Due to the steadily increasing number of spectators and the increasing popularity of the festival, the Mayen Castle Festival was brought into being in 1987 under its own directorship. One of the former directors is Hans-Joachim Heyse , who also appeared there as an actor. In the 2017 season, the Castle Festival reached a new visitor record with over 36,000 spectators.
