history

The castle theater is located in an outbuilding of Neuwied Castle, built in 1799 . In 1840 the building was transformed into a private theater and in 1860 into a public residence theater, in which operas, operettas and plays were performed.

A forerunner of today's state theater was the Westmark-Landestheater , founded in Koblenz in 1938 , which was renamed Landestheater Moselland in 1940 . In 1948 this state theater moved to Neuwied and took on the name Landesbühne Rheinland-Pfalz .

In 1977/78 the Neuwied Palace Theater was extensively rebuilt according to plans by Hansjoachim Neckenig and has since offered 273 seats. As the opening performance after the renovation, Lessing's Minna von Barnhelm was given on February 25, 1978 .

Walter Ullrich was the artistic director from 1979 to 2019. Lajos Wenzel has been director of the Rhineland-Palatinate state theater since 2019.
