Hans-Joachim Heyse

Hans-Joachim Heyse (born June 29, 1929 in Liegnitz ; † March 23, 2013 in Mayen ) was a German director , theater director , actor and writer .

Life

Heyse came from Lower Silesia . After graduating from high school in Magdeburg, he completed an acting training at the acting studio of the Magdeburg Municipal Theaters from 1948 to 1950 . He made his stage debut as an actor in 1950 at the Theater der Stadt Zeitz as Melchthal in Wilhelm Tell . In the role of “youthful hero” he was engaged at the Theater der Stadt Zeitz (1950–1952) and at the Theater Meiningen (1952–1953). At the Meiningen Theater he played Ferdinand in Kabale und Liebe (1952/1953 season). In 1953 he went to West Germany and began working as an assistant director at the Schauspielhaus Bochum under the management of Hans Schalla . In 1956 he directed for the first time alone.

Heyse staged a broad repertoire on the theater stage , which included plays from antiquity, dramas by William Shakespeare , the German-speaking authors of the Classical and Romantic periods , but also plays from the turn of the century, modern and contemporary theater. His favorite directors include William Shakespeare, Carl Sternheim and Bertolt Brecht ; but he also directed modern authors, including Edward Bond . Heyses staging of the play Music by Frank Wedekind at the Schauspielhaus Bochum was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 1965 . Heyse also worked as a director in the field of opera and ballet .

From 1964 to 1966 Heyse was senior director at the stages of the city of Bonn and then until 1970 at the Bochum theater. As the successor to Karl Pempelfort , he was general director at the stages of the city of Bonn (from 1970 to 1981). From 1979 to 1984 he directed the Luisenburg Festival in Wunsiedel . From 1988 to 2004 he was the artistic director of the Mayen Castle Festival . He also appeared as an actor at the Mayen Castle Festival; in 1992 he played the aging Willy Loman in the play Death of a Salesman .

He was also a professor at the Folkwang University in Essen from 1983 to 1985 . His daughter Cornelia Heyse is also an actress.
