Intendant
As a director (derived from the Latin word intendere , his striving for something directed) is called in German-speaking overall responsibility for managing and artistic director of a public-service broadcaster , a festival hall , a theater , an opera house , a symphony orchestra , a festival or a similar institution. A theater director or principal , on the other hand, is an independent entrepreneur who leases or owns a theater.
history
At the feudal court, the manager of the (e.g. royal or princely ) clothing store was called the manager.
During absolutism , so-called intendants were responsible for collecting taxes for the king. Since they often enriched themselves in this activity, they were despised by the people of the 3rd class. Something similar can already be found in the New Testament about tax collectors.
Tasks and functions
As a rule, the general manager embodies the top management of his company and is therefore the superior . At the same time, he is often artistically active himself: directors of large theaters and opera houses often work as a director or, less often, as a musical director . For around twenty years, management skills have been given greater weight.
At the German public broadcasters, the director is elected and appointed by the Broadcasting Council.
In the stage area , the director is usually appointed by the financing municipalities or federal states . If the artistic director's area of competence includes drama and ballet ( Dreispartenhaus ) in addition to music theater , he is given the title of general director . Particularly large opera houses, which are financed by the state, are run by a state director. He even has the (at least honorary) supervision for an entire federal state .
Gender distribution
At German theaters, 20% of the directorships are occupied by women (as of 2018).
