Klaus Zehelein

Klaus Zehelein (born September 5, 1940 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German dramaturge , professor , former academy president and opera director .

Training and engagements

After graduating from high school, Zehelein studied German , musicology and philosophy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. From 1959 to 1966 he also regularly took part in the Darmstadt summer courses for new music .

From 1967 to 1970 Zehelein was employed as a dramaturge at the Kiel Theater and from there moved to the Oldenburg State Theater to take up a position as chief dramaturge. From 1977 to 1987 he worked as chief dramaturge for the Städtische Bühnen Frankfurt and soon became the coordinated opera director there. This was followed by a two-year activity as a freelance drama and opera dramaturge in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Brussels and Vienna before he became artistic director of the Hamburg Thalia Theater in 1989 . From 1991 to 2006 Zehelein was opera director at the Stuttgart State Opera .

Teaching activities

Zehelein was a lecturer in music sociology at the University of Oldenburg . In addition, he taught as a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota , at the Collège international de philosophie in Paris, at the Institute for Applied Theater Studies at the University of Gießen and from 1986 to 1992 at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

From autumn 2006 to August 2014 he was President of the Bavarian Theater Academy August Everding at the Prinzregententheater in Munich and headed the dramaturgy course there and at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Offices

From 2003 to 2015 Zehelein was President of the German Stage Association . In 2006 he became a member of the art advisory board of the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, which was set up for three years. He is also on the advisory board of the German Federal Cultural Foundation and a member of the board of trustees of the Academy for Spoken Word in Stuttgart.

Awards

Zehelein received the German Critics' Prize in 1983 for his dramaturgical work at the Frankfurt Opera and was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Medal of Merit in 2001 for his special services to the state of Baden-Württemberg . He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, in the summer of 2006. In 2007 he was appointed a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts .

In the critics' survey of the specialist magazine Opernwelt , the Stuttgart State Opera under Zehelein's leadership was named Opera House of the Year in 1994, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2006 .
