Manfred Beilharz

Manfred Beilharz (born July 13, 1938 in Böblingen ) is a German former artistic director , former festival director and theater director . Beilharz has made a particular contribution to international theater work. From 2002 to 2008 he was President of the International Theater Institute (ITI) and from 1999 to 2014 headed the German center of the ITI. Manfred Beilharz founded several theater festivals, the most important of which is the theater biennial New Plays from Europe .

Study and job

Beilharz studied German , law and theater studies at the Universities of Tübingen and Munich and completed his studies in 1967 with the second state examination in law and a doctorate in theater and copyright law. During his studies, Beilharz founded the studio stage of the University of Munich between 1964 and 1967, together with Peter Stein and Otto Sander , among others . After completing his studies, in 1967 he worked as an assistant director at the Münchner Kammerspiele and spent several study visits to Paris and London .

Directorships in Tübingen, Freiburg and Kassel

In the 1968/69 season, Beilharz was senior director and chief dramaturge at the Westphalian State Theater (WLT) Castrop-Rauxel . From 1970 to 1975 he took over the management of the Landestheater Tübingen and was then in the same position from 1976 to 1983 at the Städtische Bühnen Freiburg im Breisgau . There he founded the Freiburg Theater Festival in 1976 (today the Tent Theater Festival). From 1983 to 1991 Beilharz was artistic director at the Staatstheater Kassel . For documenta 8 (1987) he founded the Spielzimmer festival and in 1990 the Theater im Aufbruch festival - Soviet theater after perestroika and glasnost . During the management of Beilharz, leading directors of the music theater in Kassel staged, such as Herbert Wernicke ( The Discovery of the Golden Age cycle ), Peter Mussbach (Mozart cycle), Siegfried Schoenbohm (Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung ) and Peter Konwitschny ( Bluebeard's Castle of Bartók ).

Intendancy in Bonn

From 1991 to 1997, Beilharz was artistic director at the Schauspiel Bonn , where he founded the Bonn Biennale, the world's largest theater festival for contemporary drama, together with Tankred Dorst and Rainer Mennicken in 1992. From 1997 to 2002, Beilharz was the successor to Giancarlo del Monaco , whom he had already succeeded as artistic director in Kassel , and general director in Bonn. Drama, opera and ballet, which had been separate until then, were combined under its direction by the Bonn city council to form today's theater of the federal city of Bonn .

Three productions, which were created in the directorship of Beilharz, were invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen (1993 Woyzeck , directed by Valentin Jeker , 1996 Der große Knall , directed by David Mouchtar-Samorai and 1999 Rose Bernd , directed by Valentin Jeker and with Johanna Wokalek in the title role).

In 2002 Beilharz was Artistic Director of the ITI Festival Theater der Welt , which took place in the theaters in Bonn, Düsseldorf, Duisburg and Cologne.

In 1995 he directed the French premiere of Frank Wedekind's Spring Awakening at the Comédie de Saint-Etienne in France .

Artistic director in Wiesbaden

From 2002 to July 2014, Beilharz was the artistic director of the Hessian State Theater Wiesbaden and artistic director of the International May Festival . The New Pieces from Europe Biennale was also continued in Wiesbaden, where it had its 12th edition in June 2014. The ballet division underwent a fundamental artistic reorientation in the directorship of Manfred Beilharz through the commitment of the choreographer Stephan Thoss . Manfred Beilharz's directorship ended in August 2014. The director, actor and former Cologne opera director Uwe Eric Laufenberg was appointed as his successor . Beilharz is an honorary member of the Hessian State Theater Wiesbaden.

Manfred Beilharz was elected President of the worldwide ITI ( International Theater Institute ) three times in a row from 2002 to 2008 . From 1999 to 2014 he was President of the German Center of the ITI (based in Berlin), of which he is an honorary member. Beilharz was chairman of the Dramaturgische Gesellschaft until 2007 , of which he is an honorary member today. Since 2004 he has been a member of the jury for the European theater prize Premio Europa. He is (founding) member of the European Theater Convention in Brussels and Paris. Manfred Beilharz is a member of the German Academy of Performing Arts (seat: Bensheim).

In March 2007, Beilharz was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his international theater work.

In 2013 he received the Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz Prize in Warsaw for his services to spreading Polish theater culture abroad.

In 2014, Beilharz received the plaque of honor from the city of Wiesbaden and the Hessian Order of Merit for promoting theater culture. In the same year, Beilharz was awarded the Brücke Berlin Initiative Prize together with Tankred Dorst for the conception of the Biennale New Pieces from Europe .
