The Landestheater Tübingen ( LTT ; full name: Landestheater Württemberg-Hohenzollern Tübingen Reutlingen ) is a cultural enterprise in Tübingen financed by public funds, donations and entrance fees . Mostly in-house productions are played, but there are also guest performances - some in foreign languages. In addition to the so-called evening schedule, it also has its own children's and youth theater division.

The State Theater gives guest performances in Baden-Württemberg and other federal states with its productions on large and small stages, and with the young LTT also in educational institutions such as schools and kindergartens.

Emergence

The history of the State Theater Württemberg-Hohenzollern Tübingen Reutlingen goes back to the post-war period. The “Städtische Schauspielhaus Tübingen” with the Schillersaal of the museum as a theater, a multi-purpose room that was also used as a cinema, was created in 1945 from a free drama group. In 1947 the cities of Tübingen and Reutlingen merged to form a "Zweckverband Städtetheater Tübingen Reutlingen". With the support of the then state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern , the current state theater emerged in 1950. Thanks to the financial participation of the state, the theater was able to hold out during the critical years after the currency reform and began regular theater operations and the production of performances for guest performances in the region. For a long time, however, the theater relied on the museum as a venue, which in the long term was an enormous burden. There was no workshop, rehearsal or office space, and the theater infrastructure was inadequate. Because of the financial crisis, both the plans to build a new theater and to expand the museum failed. However, since the space requirements exceeded the spatial possibilities of the museum and the fire, construction and commercial police finally considered the game operation no longer responsible, the search for a permanent solution was more urgent than before.

After the reconstruction of the museum, begun in 1962, failed due to the different interests of the museum owners and the state theater as well as the lack of subsidies from the city of Tübingen, the LTT finally began to look for a solution on its own. In 1975 the final own venue was found. In a four-year planning and construction phase, the Schäfer chair factory, which was vacant at the time, was converted into the LTT headquarters.

On September 23, 1978 play began in the workshop with the German premiere of "Mensch Meier" by Franz Xaver Kroetz . On September 21, 1979, the Great Hall was finally inaugurated and opened for use with Friedrich Schiller'sThe Robbers ”.

Five years later, an independent children's and youth theater division was established at the LTT, today's “Young LTT”.

Facts and inspiration

As a state theater, the LTT plays more than a quarter of its total of more than 900 performances annually in side trips throughout Baden-Württemberg , the neighboring federal states, as well as in Switzerland and Austria . At the same time, the LTT is the city theater for Tübingen and Reutlingen. His ensemble consists of 24 actors, plus a total of around 100 other employees in artistic, administrative and technical areas. The LTT has a total of three venues (capacity between 50 and 385 seats) in Tübingen, where around twenty of its own productions are shown annually. Every three years, alternating with the Zimmer Theater Tübingen and the Theater Lindenhof from the Swabian Alb, the LTT also plays the open-air summer theater.

“Theater work begins with asking the right questions. Also the big questions: How do we want to live and what for? To give a fundamentally provisional and discussion-worthy answer with every performance - that is the common thread of our work. It doesn't always have to work. But it is the job of us theater people. The LTT is a free space - a free space to play, feel and think that can help us advance. Even without a solution. All of this can get really loud. Fun, terror, embarrassment, eroticism, nonsense, vitality. Not so afraid - we are timid enough in everyday life! "

Founded in 1984 as a children's and youth theater (KJT) and renamed in 2014, the Young LTT brings the boundaries between theater, dance, performance, music, literature and visual arts to flow. Whether kindergarten or youth play: with children's book classics and play developments, dramatic children's literature and commissioned work, the space is opened up for experiences that should give every child access to culture and art. Around six new productions per season regularly complement the repertoire.

Theater education

Under the motto “Whoever knows more, sees more”, the State Theater has launched a number of educational theater programs. It invites you not only to visit productions by the theater, but also to have a say and help shape it. Be it as a player in one of the play clubs or as a school class - the motto is: “More than just watching”. The offer ranges from theater groups, in which theater is performed under professional conditions, to a wide-ranging training program in which you can gain your own experience in dealing with the medium of theater, to play-related, preparatory workshops to the possibility of becoming a partner class and to experience the development process of a production up close. The theater lesson offers a special introduction to the art of watching . In an interactive hybrid form, children can explore how theater differs from other media right before attending a performance. They use small experiments to illustrate the important role that the audience plays in the theater.

In addition, the Landestheater has set itself the task of constantly asking the question, together with children, adolescents and adults, whether the offer is also the right one for the respective target groups. That is why the Young LTT is always looking for "test classes" for all of its productions, who report their impressions after a rehearsal visit.

LTT laboratory

The LTT-Labor is a play club from the age of 18, the aim of which is to create a play over the course of a season in interaction between theater educators and interested parties. Most current, socially relevant topics are chosen as the basis. At the end of the corresponding season, the laboratory leads to the performance of the developed piece.

Young scene

The Junge Szene develops its own production per season, which is regularly performed in the LTT after the premiere. Just like the laboratory, the group forms anew every year and offers interested children and adolescents an insight into what goes on in the theater and, under professional guidance, enables them to have their first experiences with acting.

There are also four other play clubs that show their productions at the LTT and are sponsored by the LTT: The children's play club, for children from the age of seven; the project workshop for children aged ten and over; the generation theater Zeitsprung with players between 12 and 92 and the women's theater Purpur for women aged 50 and over.
