criticism

Criticism of Peter Spuhler's management style has repeatedly been made known. This criticism reached its peak so far in summer 2020. On June 27, 2020, the Badische Neuesten Nachrichten (BNN) reported on the premature departure of the opera dramaturge Boris Kehrmann, which had been announced at short notice. He told the newspaper that meaningful work was not possible under Spuhler. Other former employees also reported - partly anonymously - of control pressure and a “climate of fear”. Before Kehrmann, the deputy opera director Patric Seibert, the opera dramaturge Deborah Maier and the first conductor Daniele Squeo had already left the theater. With reference to internal circles, the newspaper further reported that opera director Nicole Braunger had also offered a termination contract in November 2019, which was rejected. In addition to excessive control mania, Spuhler was also accused of not using the potential of the ensemble well enough and of hindering the creativity of the employees through his management style. Differences between him and theater workers had already been reported for the first time in 2015, when administrative director Michael Obermeier took legal action against his planned transfer to Stuttgart. At that time, a mediation company was commissioned by politics to clarify the problems.

In the weeks that followed, this criticism was confirmed by the staff council, the theater's development association and the directors of the orchestra and choir. Further allegations concerned an excessive workload, which would have led to several burnout cases, and the filling of management positions with confidants of Stuhler's, such as the technical director Ivica Fulir. Despite the known criticism, Peter Spuhler's contract was extended for a further six years in 2019, which is reported to be due to the influence of the chairman of the administrative board, Baden-Württemberg's art minister Theresia Bauer . She knew him from his time as artistic director at her place of residence in Heidelberg .

After a meeting on July 17th, the Board of Directors announced that Peter Stuhler would remain in office. Around 270 employees had previously demonstrated in front of the theater building.
