Stephan Thoss

Stephan Thoss (* 1965 in Leipzig ) is a German ballet - choreographer and artistic director for dance at the National Theater in Mannheim .

Life

After training as a dancer at the Palucca School in Dresden , where he was taught German expressive dance by his teacher Patricio Bunster , he initially worked as a dancer and later as a choreographer at the Saxon State Opera in Dresden.

In 1998 he was appointed ballet director of the Bühnen Kiel and in 2001 ballet director of the Hanover State Opera . In between, Thoss was invited as a guest choreographer by the Hamburg Ballet under John Neumeier , the Stuttgart Ballet under Marcia Haydée , the Bavarian State Ballet , the Balletto di Toscana Florence, the Nederlands Dans Theater and most recently in 2006 from the Aalto-Theater Essen. In addition, his ensemble has performed abroad in Italy, France, Croatia, Finland, Indonesia, Taiwan, Brazil, Thailand and the USA.

Filmmaker Ralf-Peter Post made a film documentary about Thoss' farewell performance at the Hanover State Opera under the title The Choreographer Stephan Thoss and Le Sacre du Printemps . Post accompanied the work of the ballet director and his ensemble during the staging of the farewell performance from the first step sequences drawn as sketches through the training to the premiere. The film was first broadcast on the ZDF theater channel in 2007.

On September 11, 2006 he was appointed by the artistic director Manfred Beilharz for the 2007/08 season as the new ballet director at the Wiesbaden State Theater . Numerous choreographies by Thoss were premiered at this theater, including Musical Sacrifice based on the work of the same name by Johann Sebastian Bach (October 20, 2007), heimuchen based on music by Philip Glass (October 18, 2008), Testing Machine and La chambre noire ( October 29 , 2007) October 2011), Fast Play and Coming and Going (October 27, 2012) and The Scent of Things (together with Giuseppe Spota), premiered on February 15, 2014.

Stephan Thoss has been director of the dance division at the Mannheim National Theater since the 2016/17 season.
