Nederlands Dans Theater
The Nederlands Dans Theater ( NDT for short ) is a The Hague- based dance company with a contemporary repertoire . The venue, which was demolished in 2015–16, was the first built by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas . The new building was designed by the architect Jo Coenen .
history
NDT was founded in 1959 by Benjamin Harkarvy , Carel Birnie and 18 dancers from the Het Nederlands Ballet (among them Hans van Manen and Rudi van Dantzig ). In 1960 van Manen took over the artistic directorate. Alongside him, Glen Tetley worked as a choreographer from 1962 to 1970 .
After initial difficulties, NDT soon found international recognition under the leadership of Benjamin Harkavy and Hans van Manen. The style peculiarities of the early splinter group also stimulated German dance theater .
When van Manen and Tetley left in 1970, a crisis ensued. But in 1975 Jiří Kylián took over the management for almost 20 years and choreographed over 50 works for the company. In 1999 Kylián handed over the artistic direction to Marianne Sarstädt. Anders Hellström has been the artistic director of the NDT since 2004 .
NDT I, II and III
- NDT I is the main company, consisting of 32 dancers.
- NDT II was founded in 1978 and consists of 12 dancers between the ages of 17 and 22 years
- NDT III was founded in 1991. It consisted of dancers over 40 years of age. The company was dissolved in 2006 for financial reasons.
