Jo Coenen

Jo Coenen (born September 30, 1949 in Heerlen ) is a Dutch architect , urban planner and university lecturer .

life and work

Coenen's influences include Luigi Snozzi and James Stirling , with whom he studied from 1977. Before he started his own business, he worked for a short time in 1979 in the architecture office of Aldo van Eyck & Theo Bosch in Amsterdam . In 1979 he opened his own architectural office in Eindhoven . First he handled a few smaller assignments, then he was already planning the library in Heerlen (1983–86) and the town hall in Delft (1984–86). Winning the competition for the Dutch Architecture Institute in Rotterdam in 1988 meant another professional breakthrough (completed in 1993). In 1997 he took part in the Triennial of Milan and the Biennale of São Paulo .

Since 1987 he has been in charge of urban planning in The Hague , Amsterdam, Maastricht , Eindhoven and Tilburg . As an urban planner, for example, he was responsible for the KNSM island in the eastern port area in Amsterdam (1988-89) as well as for the Vaillantlaan in The Hague and the former Sphinx Céramique site in Maastricht (1987).

From 2000 to 2004 Coenen was the master builder of the Netherlands . In 1995 he won the BNA Cube, an award from the Association of Dutch Architects (BNA). He is an honorary member of the Association of German Architects . He is the managing director of the International Building Exhibition , which will be held in Parkstad Limburg from 2013 to 2020 .

University professor

As a university lecturer, he was and is active in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. In 1976 he was already a lecturer at the Technical University of Eindhoven in 1976 , and two years later at the Maastricht Architecture Academy. From 1987 to 1995 he held the chair for building theory and design at the University of Karlsruhe . In 1995 he received a professorship at RWTH Aachen University . Since 2001 he has been a professor at the Technical University of Delft .
