KNSM-eiland ( German  KSNM-Insel ) is a district and an island in the municipality of Amsterdam-Oost ( North Holland Province ) in the "Oostelijk Havengebied" (German eastern port area ). The district has 2,425 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on a land area of 13 hectares.

history

The KNSM island was created towards the end of the 19th century as a breakwater in the Amsterdam IJ , as was the adjoining island of Java-eiland . It was later used as a port area. In 1903 this area was the location of the shipping company Koninklijke Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij (short: KNSM). The abbreviation of the company became the name of the island.

The KNSM shipping company existed from 1856 to 1981 and in 1977 the company moved from the island. In the 1980s the island was populated by squatters and artists. The actual residential district was built in the 1990s according to the plan of the Dutch architect Jo Coenen , who also built the large round building Emerald Empire on the eastern tip of the island. The plan included two large apartment blocks 170 meters long and 60 meters wide with 300 social rental apartments . One of them, named Piraeus, was built by the German architect Hans Kollhoff , the other is called Barcelona and was designed by the Belgian architect Bruno Albert. Also noteworthy is the Sky Dome high-rise by Wiel Arets with a height of 60 meters, with 22 floors, of which 20 each accommodate five identical apartments.

Numerous older port buildings have been preserved. This includes the KNSM canteen and “Loods 6” (shed 6) . It was bought by the municipality of Amsterdam for the local artists for the symbolic amount of one guilder .

In 2000, the "Eastern Port Area Project Group" examined the living conditions on the island. 76% of the population consisted of one-person households and households without children, 18% of families with children.

The first Amsterdam Wine Market ( Dutch: Amsterdamse Wijnmarkt ) took place on May 22, 2011 on KNSM Island.

The KNSM island can be reached with the city bus “Lijn 65” (line 65), which runs from the Rivierenbuurt, Amsterdam Amstel station , Watergraafsmeer and the Indian Buurt ( Indian Quarter ) to the KNSM island. Also since 2004 with the tram (Tram) No. 10 to Azartplein on the KNSM island.
