In 1488 a castle was built to defend the city called Sint Antoniespoort , which also served as the city gate . The area was expanded from 1614 and the defensive system was rebuilt in 1617/1618 into the city scales with the name De Waag . At that time the place was called Lastage . Part of the Kloveniersburgwal canal was drained to create a new marketplace, hence the name Nieuwmarkt . In the beginning it served as a cattle market and execution place , convicted criminals came under the guillotine here . In the 14th century , the residents celebrated a folk festival on the Plein twice a year , which regularly ended in disputes. The community council then banned the fair in 1876, which led to a "popular uprising". After the Second World War , the Nieuwmarkt became too small and the fair was moved to Dam , where it is still held today. During the Second World War, the Nieuwmarkt belonged to the Jodenbuurt ("Jewish Quarter") in Amsterdam.

The Neumarkt is located between the Geldersekade and the Kloveniersburgwal , a few steps from the red light district , called De Wallen , and is part of Amsterdam's Chinatown district . It is one of the oldest residential areas in the city. An antique and book market as well as Amsterdam Culinair and a general goods market ("Algemeene Warenmarkt") take place throughout the year . The market came into being in 1990 when what was then the parking lot was set up as a goods market. On Saturdays there is an organic food market .

From Amsterdam Central Station , the Nieuwmarkt can be reached on foot in just under a quarter of an hour. In the center of the square is the building of the former city scales De Waag , which is now a restaurant. The historical rooms shine in a special atmosphere as they are illuminated by 300 candles. In 1971, the Nieuwmarkt project group was founded by the local council , aiming to renovate the Nieuwmarktviertel as a residential area.

Demonstrations at the Nieuwmarkt, known as Nieuwmarktrellen and Metrorellen , took place in the spring of 1975. They were directed against the construction of a subway , the Amsterdam Metro and the demolition of many residential buildings. In today's Nieuwmarkt underground station , wall paintings are a reminder of this time. The Amsterdam squatting movement , including the former Provo Rob Stolk , played a decisive role in the demonstrations.

An online magazine called Opnieuw reports on the residential and business district.
