Slotervaart , named after the canal of the same name , is a district in the Amsterdam Nieuw-West district in the municipality of Amsterdam , province of North Holland . In 2017 Sloterwaart had 18,080 inhabitants on an area of 11.07 km².

history

The Slotervaart Canal was a connection between the former village of Sloten and what was then Overtoom . Slotervaart had an important function as a transport route until the 1950s. On the canal, fresh vegetables were delivered daily to the markets on the Prinsengracht and later the Marnixstraat.

In 1935 the "General Expansion Plan " ( Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan , AUP) was drawn up. This plan contained descriptions of what the new districts should look like in the future. The Second World War caused delays in urban expansion. In 1955 the first residential buildings were built in the now existing Slotervaart district. The original name of the district was Slotervaart / Overtoomse Veld , now just Slotervaart. The name Overtoomse Veld is only used today to denote a neighborhood district. In this residential area are the Queen Wilhelminaplein , named after Queen Wilhelmina (1880–1962), and the “World Fashion Center”.

Slotervaart includes the residential areas:

  • Nieuw Sloten . The name comes from the former village of Sloten, where the Kasterleepark is located.
  • Oostoever was built in the second half of the 1990s.
  • Sloterparkwijk . The park was created between 1960 and 1989. The President Allendelaan is located in the north-western part of the park , it represents a connection between Osdorp and the Slotermeer. In 1990 the park was "divided" into the Geuzenveld, Slotervaart and Osdorp districts.
