history

Together with the two lakes Belmer- and Broekemeer, Buikslotermeer became a polder around 1627 . In 1825 there was a dike breakthrough in the village of Durgerdam and Buikslotermeer and the "Waterland" area were flooded. In 1916 there was another and, for the time being, last major flood. The Buikslotermeerpolder or Buikslotermeer used to belong to the former municipalities of Nieuwendam and Buiksloot . Both parishes were assigned to the city of Amsterdam in 1921 . The name Buikslotermeer is used for the whole Buikslotermeer polder area .

A new housing estate was built here in the 1990s. The shopping center ( Dutch Winkelcentrum ) Boven't Y on Buikslotermeerplein is visited by residents from all over Amsterdam-Noord. It has an area of 8,600 m² and, in addition to numerous shops, 40 social housing and 800 parking spaces have been built. In 2011 a cinema and a cultural center (Dutch Cultuurcentrum ) will be added. With 136 stores, it is one of the largest shopping centers in the Netherlands . Once a year a festival week is organized here in June with music, dance and a street market. An annual festival , the Over't IJ Festival , has been held in Noord since 1992 . There is also the Norderparkfestival . There are parking garages with roof terraces in the Loenermark neighborhood.

On the Buikslotermeerplein is the Buikslotermeermarkt, which is best known for its wide range of clothes. The market is located in the middle of the shopping center and is open Monday from 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm and Tuesday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In the Buikslotermeer district there is also the “Elzenhagen” sports complex, the “Noorderbegraafsplaats” cemetery, a library, a golf course and a sewage treatment plant .
