City map of IJburg |
IJburg is a newly created district in the east of Amsterdam as part of the VINEX program . IJburg consists of the washed up artificial islands Steigereiland, Haveneiland and Rieteilanden in the southwestern IJmeer . The planning for phase 1, which has meanwhile been largely completed, envisaged 18,000 apartments for 45,000 residents, including infrastructure such as schools, libraries, sports facilities, a beach (in the northeast of Haveneiland) and shops.
In 2017 IJburg had almost 25,000 inhabitants. Further islands with apartments for 20,000 inhabitants have been or are being washed up in the northeast: Centrumeiland and Strandeiland (1.5 km²), as well as a pure nature reserve Buiteneiland. They can be built on from 2020 or 2022.
Nearby (in the south) is the largest nature and city park in Amsterdam, the Diemerpark .
history
The first plans for a new part of the city were made in 1965 by the Van den Broek en Bakema architecture firm. In a 1997 referendum, 60% voted against the IJburg plan, but the necessary quorum was not achieved. At the end of 1999, the construction of the first island began. The architect Koen Olthuis was commissioned to plan the residential buildings.
Connection
The district is connected by the Amsterdam tram through line 26. This line goes to Amsterdam Central Station , the other terminal is on the island of Haveneiland and is to be continued to Strandeiland.
Line 66 of GVB and line 359 of Connexxion also run on IJburg .
IJburg is connected to the mainland to the west and east by bridges. For pedestrians and cyclists there is also a route to the southwest via Diemerpark and the sweeping Nescio Bridge over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal .
