Diemerpark
The Diemerpark is the largest city park in Amsterdam with an area of around 90 hectares and is therefore around twice the size of the well-known Vondelpark in Amsterdam's city center . The Diemerpark, located between the IJburg and the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal , was opened in 2004 and offers numerous recreational opportunities for visitors.
history
In the 12th century the "Diemerzeedijk" (German: Diemerseedeich ) was built to protect the surrounding land against the floods of the Zuiderzee . However, dike breakthroughs often occurred . In 1932 the final dike changed the Zuiderzee into an inland lake without the devastating previous floods. This made the area around the inland lake a natural area with numerous vegetation and many animal species.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the area of today's nature and city park was used as a garbage dump for household and chemical waste. This made the Diemerzeedijk one of the most polluted places in the Netherlands. From 1973 onwards, no more waste could be incinerated and ten years later the landfill was definitely closed. From 1998 to 2001 a soil renovation took place. In 2004 the park was opened to visitors. The chemical waste has been dumped illegally for years. The municipality of Amsterdam was able to avoid legal proceedings in a settlement procedure ( Dutch : “schikking”) by paying 100,000 euros to the Dutch state.
The former garbage dump was insulated with cement, a plastic sheet and a "Trisoplast" sealant. The leaking seepage water is constantly pumped out and cleaned from numerous wells. The Diemerpark was created on this basis. At the entrances to the park, visitors are made aware that some restrictions apply to the use of the nature park: people or dogs are not allowed to dig on the site ( Graven, zowel door mensen als honden is niet toegestaan ), and the attachment of Poles or tent pegs are prohibited and dogs must be kept on a leash. According to the municipality of Amsterdam, the groundwater is not contaminated and therefore harmless to trees and plants. However, the trees do not grow taller than five meters. The south-eastern part of the park is largely inaccessible to visitors because it consists of swamp . There are now a large number of animals in the natural area, around 200 species of birds, grass snakes, shrews, nightingales, bluethroats, kingfishers and others. In addition, around 200 types of plants were counted and some mammals came back in the nature park, including deer, bats and ermines. Reptiles like the grass snake are harmless to visitors.
