François Cavanna (born February 22, 1923 in Paris , † January 29, 2014 in Créteil ) was a French journalist and writer.

Life

Cavanna was the only son of the Italian-born mason Luigi Cavanna, who received French citizenship in 1939 , and the Frenchwoman Marguerite Charvin . He grew up in Nogent-sur-Marne , where numerous Italian immigrants lived. After completing secondary school ( brevet supérieur ) in 1939, he worked in Paris for the post office ( Postes, Télégraphes et Téléphones ) . When the German troops marched in in 1940, he followed orders to leave for southern France, which he tried to do on a bicycle. However, he soon returned to occupied Paris, was, like many other colleagues, dismissed from the postal service and worked for a fruit and vegetable dealer. He later took up an apprenticeship as a bricklayer. In 1943 he was conscripted by the authorities of the Vichy regime and sent to the labor service (French STO, Service du travail obligatoire ) in Germany. He had to u. a. work in the armaments production of Graetz AG . Like other forced laborers, he was also used in rescue and clean-up work after air raids. At his workplace he met and fell in love with the Ukrainian slave laborer Maria. However, Maria was abducted by Soviet soldiers after the liberation; despite years of searching, Cavanna was unable to find her.

After returning to France in 1945 he began to work as a journalist . From 1949 he also worked as a cartoonist . From 1960 he was editor of the satirical magazine Hara-Kiri and from 1970 of the well-known satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo . For the autobiographical novel Les Russkoffs , which describes the war years, Cavanna received the Prix Interallié in 1979 .
