Hara-Kiri (magazine)

Hara-Kiri was a French satirical magazine that appeared monthly from 1960 to 1985. The founders were François Cavanna and Georges Bernier (called "professeur Choron"). The subtitle "Journal bête et méchant" reflects the allegations of the state and church authorities attacked of being stupid and malicious.

The monthly issue (mensuel)

The magazine was known for its harsh and disrespectful criticism in the de Gaulle era . In 1961 two and in 1966 six issues could not be published due to a ban. After the style of Hara-Kiri had been described as "of bad taste", the editorial team temporarily extended the subtitle to "Journal bête, méchant et de mauvais goût" (issue 110 of November 1970). Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir intervened in 1966 when the magazine was banned. The last monthly issue was issue 291 from December 1985. Thereafter, the issues appeared four to seven times a year until 1988 and ended with issue 308. In addition to these regular issues, there have been numerous special issues without a number over the years. The attempt to revive Hara-Kiri in 2000 resulted in only 4 issues.

The weekly edition (hebdomadaire)

Since 1969 a weekly edition has been published under the title Hara-Kiri Hebdo . From issue 16 the title was L'Hebdo Hara-Kiri . Issue 94, on the occasion of the death of Charles de Gaulle in 1970, gave the Minister of the Interior an opportunity to ban the entire series of the weekly edition.

Then the new title Charlie Hebdo was founded by the same employees . François Cavanna started the first issue of Charlie Hebdo with the article There is no censorship in France . At the end of 1981 the last issue was published in issue 580, this time under the old title Hara-Kiri Hebdo . In 1992 the title Charlie Hebdo was revived.
