Floradorp (also called Bloemenbuurt ) is a district in Amsterdam-Noord .

history

Floradorp , formerly called "Tuindorp Buiksloterham", was laid out between 1900 and 1925 and is one of the Amsterdam garden cities ( Tuindorp in Dutch ). The quarter, also called Bloemenbuurt , is located between Kamperfoelieweg, Johan van Hasseltweg, Sneeuwbalweg, Floraweg and is popularly called de Rimboe .

Already in the early years (1920) the district was nicknamed Rimboe ( German  primeval forest ), probably because of the many mosquitoes and the malaria that occurs there. However, the origin of the name can no longer be precisely determined. The name may also have arisen because of the high and excessive vegetation at the time when the area was not yet inhabited. Today the term is often used in connection with youth gangs present there, such as the “Floraboys” and “De Petjes”. The roads in Floradorp are often named after flowers, including Dotterbloemstraat ( Marigold ), Bloemstraat (Flower Street), Pinksterbloemstraat ( meadowfoam ) Kamperfolieweg ( honeysuckle ). 90% of the apartments are social housing .

The first apartments built were intended for permanent workers and their families and were not allowed to contain any “superfluous luxuries” (for example, bathrooms ). The rents were correspondingly low and the individual rooms were small (minimum dimensions). Between 1927 and 1929, 600 new apartments were built for larger families and in 1995 the older apartments were renovated.

In Floradorp there is the Florapark as well as a swimming pool, the Floraparkbad, an old people's home and a youth center. The documentary "Kerstmis in Floradorp" (German Christmas in Floradorp , 1997) was awarded the film prize: Best Long Documentary ( Gouden Kalf ) for the "Best Long Documentatie" by the Nederlands Film Festival .

On January 1, 2017, Floradorp had 2,475 inhabitants in Zuid (German South ) and 2,385 inhabitants in Noord ( North ).

Floradorp / Bloemenbuurt

There are different interpretations of the names Floradorp or Bloemenbuurt (German flower district ). According to "Dienst Ruimtelijke Ordening" (German Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning ) there are different names for the same district. The Huurdersvereniging Floradorp (German tenants' association Floradorp ) is of the opinion that Floradorp is only part of the Bloemenbuurt . Publieksvoorlichting, Stadsdeel Noord sees the Bloemenbuurt as a large residential area that is not, however, a separate area.

The author Wil Swart writes that the former Polder Buiksloterham contained only a few farms. In 1903 a report was published that provided the area north of the IJ as an industrial area and as a residential area for working-class families. In 1929 the village of Floradorp was completed.

The archives of the Ymere housing association show that the area with the official name Tuindorp Buiksloterham was laid out. It was later named Floradorp. Since Floradorp was associated with "Rimboe" (because of high unemployment, poverty and crime), the residents called the area Bloemenbuurt . Both terms are used for the district by institutions and organizations.

Between 1918 and 1945 around 90,000 apartments were built in Amsterdam's garden cities ( Tuindorpen in the Netherlands ), including in Tuindorp Oostzaan, Floradorp, Disteldorp, Vogeldorp Nieuwendam and Buiksloot . Both authors write about Floradorp, without reference to the Bloemenbuurt, since the name came about later.
