Het Parool is a Dutch daily newspaper . Once supraregional, in 1997 the focus was placed on the capital Amsterdam , which is also the editorial office. However, the newspaper is still read nationwide. Het Parool was founded in 1941 as an illegal underground newspaper and has been published since 2003 by the “Onverveerd” publishing house, which, after leaving the former parent company PCM Uitgevers, was founded specifically for the purpose of publishing the newspaper. In the first quarter of 2008, the newspaper had a paid circulation of 64,251 copies. Ronald Ockhuysen has been the editor-in-chief since 2015.

history

In July 1940, Frans Goedhart published De nieuwsbrief van Pieter 't Hoen for the first time , a multi-page illegal document directed against the German occupation in World War II , which he continued with further editions (two to four per month). In the same year he began looking for like-minded employees, with whom he finally published the first edition of Het Parool as a resistance newspaper in February 1941 . During the occupation, some of the staff were executed or died in the concentration camp . Goedhart himself was arrested and sentenced to death while trying to flee to England, but was later able to escape. After the Second World War he lost the power struggle for the post of editor-in-chief of Het Parool and had to leave this to his namesake Gerrit Jan van Heuven Goedhart . Goedhart was then involved in the establishment of the Partij van de Arbeid and from 1946 to 1971 (from 1970 as an independent member of parliament) in the Dutch lower house .

Het Parool initially became one of the largest newspapers in post-war Netherlands. In 1968 she merged with de Volkskrant to form the joint venture “Perscombinatie” (now De Persgroep Nederland), where she was initially the dominant half with a share of 60:40. This action, however, has not stopped the steady decline in circulation that began after 1960 and lasted for thirty years. In 1997 the newspaper was focused on Amsterdam but did not become a full local paper as it is read outside of Amsterdam. In January 2003 Het Parool of PCM Uitgevers, which now also the newspapers Algemeen Dagblad , NRC Handelsblad and Trouw belonged spun off after the Belgian media group "De Persgroep" was entered as a major shareholder in the newspaper. Due to the slump in the advertising market, a quarter of the editorial team was laid off this year. The newspaper has remained true to its political roots over the years and is still considered to be oriented towards social democracy today.

Het Parool has been published in tabloid format since 2004 . After editor-in-chief Erik van Gruijthuijsen changed to the news agency Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau (ANP) as the new director and editor-in-chief on March 1, 2007 , Barbara van Beukering, head of Volkskrant magazine since 2002, was chosen as his successor after a lengthy search.

Edition development

In 1960, Het Parool reached its all-time high with a paid circulation of 236,900. Since then, the circulation fell steadily until 1990, but at the time of the merger with de Volkskrant to form “Perscombinatie” the newspaper was still the higher-circulation one. Since 1990, after the low of just over 120,000, minimal increases in circulation have been recorded for the first time. However, the new competitors in the form of the Internet and the Dutch branch of the Swedish free newspaper metro , which has been appearing since July 1999, started a new downward trend that has not yet been stopped.
