history

The first issue of Sp! Ts appeared on June 21, 1999, and on the same day the Dutch branch of the Swedish free newspaper metro came out for the first time . The editor-in-chief was Wim Hoogland, who came from the sister newspaper De Telegraaf . In October of that year, the newspaper filed a lawsuit with the Dutch Cartel Office against the exclusive agreement between the Nederlandse Spoorwegen and metro , which guaranteed metro exclusive distribution in the stations of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen, but failed. The newspaper was then distributed in front of the train stations and the exclusive contract lasted until 2004. Despite this exclusive contract, Sp! Ts was able to achieve a similar importance as metro .

Hoogland returned to De Telegraaf in November 2005 and was replaced on January 30, 2006 by Bart Brouwers, previously editor-in-chief at Dagblad De Limburger . In October 2006, Sp! Ts started a daily video broadcast called "¡Que Pasó!" In collaboration with students from the INHOLLAND university chain.
