The Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau (ANP) is a Dutch news agency . The company's headquarters are in Rijswijk .

history

In December 1934 the Dutch newspaper association Nederlandse Dagbladpers (NDP, Dutch daily newspaper press) founded the Stichting Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau (Foundation General Dutch Press Office) as the sponsor of the ANP. The two already existing news agencies Vaz Dias and Nederlandsch Correspondentie Bureau were incorporated into the new agency. ANP began its work on July 1, 1935 and took over the Nederlandsch Telegraaf-Agentschap on January 1, 1936 .

Within a short period of time, ANP managed to monopolize international and national reporting. This resulted in a standardization of the content of the newspapers, whose editorial offices now concentrated on the news that was most interesting for their readership. At that time the system of pillaring still existed in the Netherlands . In other words , there was a clear separation of Reformed , Catholic , socialist or liberal- oriented sections of the population who had little private contact with one another and also had their own newspapers. After the Netherlands surrendered in World War II , ANP immediately fell into the hands of the German occupiers, and the Jewish employees were dismissed.

In May 2001 the foundation was transformed into a BV (similar to a limited liability company).

ANP today

ANP is the largest news agency in the Netherlands and employs 250 people, around 160 of whom are journalists. Editorial offices exist in Amsterdam , Brussels , The Hague , Eindhoven and Rotterdam .

ANP supplies newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, websites and companies with photos and reports. ANP also represents news agencies from other countries in the Netherlands, these are dpa (Germany), AFP (France), EFE (Spain) and Belga (Belgium).

Oddities

During the German occupation in World War II, ANP was popularly known as “Adolf's newest parrot” due to the fact that it was harmonized at the time .
