Belga is a Belgian news agency . The company is based in the Brussels suburb of Schaerbeek / Schaarbeek .
The news agency was founded in August 1920 under the name "Agence télégraphique belge de Presse (Belga)". Initially exclusively French-speaking , in 1944 Dutch was added as the second main language of Belgium (the third official language, German, is not used). In 1948 the Belgian newspapers acquired a majority in the press agency. In 1970 the editorial team was split into a Dutch and a French-speaking part. In 2000, Belga and the dpa subsidiary “aktuell international” founded the joint venture “news aktuell Belga”, which is specifically geared towards press releases.
Belga supplies newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, websites and companies with photos and reports. The company has 127 employees, 106 of whom are journalists (as of 2007).
