history
At the beginning of the 1960s the area was a polder and serves as a sludge deposit ( Dutch excavator ) from the North Sea Canal . The polder belonged to the municipality of Oostzaan . On August 1, 1966, Molenwijk was assigned to the municipality of Amsterdam, which was planning a residential area there.
The plan for the residential area came from the architect K. Geerts in cooperation with the municipality of Amsterdam and 15 apartment buildings (Dutch Flatgebouwen ) with 1256 apartments were built. At the edge of the quarter there was a high-rise building (Dutch Torenflat ) with 16 floors. In Molenwijk there are two schools, a shopping center called De Wieken , a library and a petting zoo ( Kinderboerderij in Dutch ) for children.
In Molenwijk there are hamlets with lots of green spaces that are car-free. The residential area can be reached by city bus number 37, which has been running from the Amstel station to Molenwijk since 2006.
