The Stadionbuurt ( German  stadium district ) is a district in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid , located in the Amsterdam-Zuid district ( province of North Holland ) and had 11,800 inhabitants on January 1, 2017. The stadium building became famous for the 1928 Summer Olympics .

history

The director of the "Gemeentelijke Woningdienst" (German institution of the community for housing ), Arie Keppler, in Amsterdam came at the beginning of the 20th century with a plan to build 1750 apartments, partly because of the housing shortage in the city. In 1919 the Dutch architect Jan Gratama (1877-1947) was hired as a supervisor to work out the plan in more detail. Under the influence of German architects, Keppler wanted to create the so-called “uniform block front” in the stadium building. Due to the explosive rise in construction costs in 1919, the costs had risen by 350% compared to 1914, and the plan was postponed for later.

Schinkeleilanden Park

The Stadionbuurt, also known as Olympic Gebied (and Olympic Kwartier called) includes the space Stadionplein opposite the Olympic Stadium , the Stadionterrein around the Olympic stadium with sports facilities. In addition, the city park Schinkel islands , the small of four islands ( Dutch island ) is: Voetbaleiland , Park Eiland , Tennis Eiland and Natuureiland . A cycle path connects the Amsterdamse Bos and the Vondelpark with the islands.

In the north of the Olympic area a new residential area was built whose architecture is reminiscent of the Amsterdam School (Dutch Amsterdamse School ).

Around 900 new apartments were built there between 2005 and 2008. The architecture and the street plan were based on Hendrik Petrus Berlage's plan for Amsterdam Zuid.

Since May 1, 2010, the districts of Amsterdam Oud-Zuid (85,000 inhabitants) and Zuideramstel have been merged under Amsterdam Zuid. The stadium building is located in the Amsterdam Oud-Zuid district.
