Nieuw Sloten is a district in the Amsterdam Nieuw-West district , in the province of Noord-Holland , and had 10,820 inhabitants in January 2017.

history

The name of the district comes from the nearby village of Sloten . Nieuw Sloten is located between the "Westelijke Tuinsteden" (Western Garden Cities ) Slotervaart , the old village of Sloten and Osdorp . The district includes two neighborhoods, Nieuw Sloten "Noord and Zuid" (north and south). The many green spaces are characteristic. Between 1990 and 1995, 4,824 new apartments were built, 45% of which were condominiums and 55% rental apartments.

In 1984 the municipality of Amsterdam decided to run as a candidate for the 1992 Olympic Games. A committee set up the plan to create an “Olympic Village” in the gardening area ( Tuindergebied ) near Sloten. As early as 1954, an agreement was made between the municipality and the nurseries that the nurseries could continue their business until 2008. This contract was terminated in 1986 in favor of the "Olympic Village" and the Amsterdam municipality expropriated the nursery owners. However, the Olympic Games did not take place in Amsterdam, but in Barcelona. The nurseries received financial compensation and moved to the Flevoland municipality of Noordoostpolder .

The De Vrije Geer nature park was opened near Nieuw Sloten in 2003 . On the south side of the village of Sloten are the parks ( Volkstuinparken ) "Eigen Hof" and "VAT" as well as the "Sportpark Sloten". In the 1990s, the new De Aker district was built (with over 10,000 inhabitants). In Nieuw Sloten you will find the Belgieplein , a square with a shopping center that is directly connected to the Kasterleepark . Number of inhabitants on Belgieplein: 1019, as of January 2010. Since May 1st, 2010, with the new subdivision of the districts of Amsterdam , Nieuw Sloten belongs to Slotervaart in the Amsterdam Nieuw West district.

From Amsterdam Centraal station , Amsterdam tram No. 2 travels via Dam , Leidsestraat, Willemsparkweg, Heemstedenstraat and Johan Huizingalaan to the terminus Nieuw Sloten . The history of today's tram (Dutch: Tram or Tramlijn ) No. 2 begins in 1881 with the "horse tram" , which was replaced in 1903 by the electric tram . Since then it has had the number 2.
