history
In 1966 some polders , which at that time still belonged to the municipality of Weesperkarspel, were assigned to the municipality of Amsterdam . The polders were drained and housing construction started. The area included Bijlmermeer, Gein and Gaasp , which later became the Amsterdam Zuid-Oost district. Gaasperdam originally had the name Zuid-Bijlmer ("South Bijlmer").
The Gaasperpark (also called "Gaasperplaspark") is located in Gaasperdam , on the northern side of the Gaasperplas . The park was created between 1977 and 1982. In 1982 the Floriade was held in the park . The Hemtuin (literally: "Hemgarten"), which was created in 1982/1983, can also be found there. In 2001 the Hemtuin, previously three hectares (ha) in size, was expanded to 10 ha. It lies between the Gaasperdammerweg and the hamlets of Holendrecht East and West.
There is also the Schooltuin Gaasperdam (literally “school garden”) which offers space for around 1000 children. Among other things, it serves as a nursery, which means that schools can often receive flowers and fruits for free. The school garden is the largest in Amsterdam and also offers the children learning material.
In the Gaasperdam district there is a primary school, a church, a cemetery, an old people's home, the petting zoo (Dutch: “Kinderboerderij”) ´t Brinkie and the Buurvrouennetwerk (a network by and for women from the neighborhood) as well as a canoe and a sailing boat club . Shopping centers are found on the Place Wisseloordplein in Gein and Reigersbos .
