The 72-hectare lake in the Polder Zuid Bijlmer was built in the 1960s to extract sand that was needed for road and rail embankments in what was then the Bijlmermeer development in Amsterdam-Zuidoost . First a thick layer of bog soil and clay was dug , then sand was sucked up to a depth of 35 meters. Since the bog soil was not completely removed, there is partly a spread out labyrinth of eroded earth walls under the water surface.

The water level of the Gaasperplas is kept by the three pumps of the Gemaal Zuid Bijlmer pumping station, built in 1972 on the north-eastern lakeshore, at an average of 2.70 meters below sea level at Amsterdam level (NAP). 40 cubic meters of excess water can be pumped into the Gaasp River from the entire Polder Zuid Bijlmer and the even lower Gein and Gaasper polders per minute. In order not to endanger the water quality in the polder, the area is also regularly supplied with water from the Gaasp river or the Abcoudermeer .

From the 1970s, a network of footpaths and cycle paths was built on the bank. The original planting of the 94 hectare park landscape around the water body consisted of fast-growing trees and easy-care meadows. On October 16, 1977, the Gaasperplas station of the Amsterdam Metro was opened in the north of the lake as the terminus of line 53 ( Gaasperplaslijn ). In the same year, the establishment of the Gaasperpark for the International Garden Show Floriade 1982 began on the northern bank . This created a landscape park with the Nellestein housing estate, gastronomy, hotels, pavilions, sculptures, rosarium , bank promenade and species-rich beech , linden and elm planting , Birch , oak and others.

The lake and the park are part of the Groengebied Amstelland recreation area , a joint project of the province of North Holland and the municipalities of Amstelveen , Amsterdam, Diemen and Ouder-Amstel . On the bank there are, among other things, a riding path, barbecue, picnic and playgrounds, the Gaasperplas Windsurfing Association , the Zeilvereniging Gaasperplas sailing club (ZVG), the Gaasperplas Canoe Association (KVG), the Eerste Hollandse Drakenboot Club , the Concrete Dragons dragon boat club , six Parking spaces and a campsite . Eels , pike , perch , pikeperch , roach , tench and crayfish as well as numerous water birds live in and on the Gaasperplas .
