During the Second World War , the registration office was located in Apollobuurt. The German occupiers used the office's name registers to track down Jewish citizens. For this reason, a Dutch resistance group led by Gerrit van der Veen carried out an attack on the registration office , in which the Dutch lawyer Laura Carola Mazirel was involved.
Most of the buildings in the Apollobuurt date from the 1920s and 1930s and were built in the style of the Amsterdam School ( Dutch Amsterdamse School ). The quarter is part of the “Plan Zuid” (German Plan Süd ) by the Dutch architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage .
The most famous shopping street is the Beethovenstraat with mostly expensive shops. In contrast to many other parts of Amsterdam, there is no social housing in the area .
