De Baarsjes is a district in the municipality of Amsterdam in the Amsterdam-West district and is located in the Dutch province of North Holland with an area of 1.64 km² and a population of around 34,000 with 126 nationalities (as of 2012).

history

The name De Baarsjes comes from the former village of the same name.

In the 17th century there was a hostel called De Drie Baarsjes in the still rural area . De Baarsjes was first reported on official documents on May 27, 1642.

In 1904 the tram line ("Tramlijn") between Amsterdam - Haarlem and Zandvoort was built and at the same time the Admiraal de Ruijterweg was laid out. This area was named Trompbuurt and belonged to the former municipality of Sloten . Since 1921 Sloten has been part of the municipality of Amsterdam. With the annexation of Sloten, the Chasseebuurt residential area was created on the southern side of A. de Ruijterweg . This quarter was expanded between 1920 and 1930 due to the "Plan West" in the style of the Amsterdam School ( Amsterdamse School ) and in 1925 the Mercatorplein was created. The neighborhoods Mercatorbuurt, Admiralenbuurt, Chasseebuurt, Trompbuurt and Postjesbuurt have been part of De Baarsjes since 1990 . It borders the Rembrandtpark and the Erasmuspark. The trams No. 7, 12, 13, 14 and 17 run through the district (as of September 2009).

Natural garden

The Natuurtuin Slatuinen (“Natural Garden Salad Garden”), named after the Slatuinenweg (literally: “Salatgartenweg”), is located in the Chasseebuurt residential area between the Slatuinenweg, the Chasseestraat, the A. de Ruijterweg and the Jacob van Wassenaar − Obdamstraat. At the beginning of the 21st century the "garden" was used as a small park and was called Wilhelmina − Parkje . Until 1984 the area belonged to the Hendriksen family and was known as Terrein Hendriksen as a tree nursery and market garden . At the beginning of the 1980s, the tree nursery was closed and the site overgrown until the municipality of Amsterdam decided in 1986 to cut around 40 trees. In 1991 residents took the initiative to convert the former tree nursery into a natural garden with a social function. The city council approved the proposal. Since then, the garden has been tended to with the help of twelve volunteers and one paid employee and opened to residents at certain times. The garden is also often referred to by users as a small hidden paradise (“hidden Paradijsje”).
