Amsterdam Nieuw-West is a municipality in the municipality of Amsterdam , province of North Holland . In January 2017 the district had 151,677 inhabitants on an area of 32.36 km².

history

Nieuw-West ( German  Neu-West ) was created as a district of Amsterdam-West after the Second World War as part of the Amsterdam Garden Cities ( Dutch Westelijke Tuinsteden ), also called "Parkstadt Amsterdam" and renamed in 2005 to Nieuw-West. The "Westelijke Tuinsteden" or Nieuw-West were built in the 1950s as a residential area according to the "General Expansion Plan " (Dutch Algemeen Uitbreidungsplan , AUP for short ) drawn up in 1928 . The district, which used to be a residential area, is now one of five Amsterdam boroughs eligible for a major investment program. With the “Richting Parkstad 2015” program from 2001, thousands of old houses were to be torn down and new buildings to be built, jobs to be created and investments to be made in offices and companies. In 2005, the initiators found that the set goals could not be achieved and a new plan, "Koers Nieuw West" (German course New West ) was drawn up. Together with housing associations, schools, companies and the residents of the district, the social and economic conditions are to be improved by 2015.

In Nieuw-West are Sloterplas, De Nieuwe Meer and the Sloterpark with the Velodrome Amsterdam . In the 1990s Oostoever, Nieuw Sloten and De Aker were added.

The Sloterplas (German Slotersee ) is used for sailing, canoeing, fishing and diving. On the northwest and southeast side is a small harbor for sailing and motor boats. This plas was excavated between 1948 and 1956 and is approximately 30 meters deep. The Sloterpark was laid out between 1960 and 1980 and is located around the Sloterplas.

Sloterplas Amsterdam

In 1921 it was still a rural area and belonged to what was then the municipality of Sloten . The park has an area of 91 hectares and is one of the largest in Amsterdam. In 1991 it was distributed across the neighboring districts of Geuzenveld / Slotermeer, Slotervaart and Osdorp . The De Nieuwe Meer (also De Oeverlanden called) is in the southwest and the banks of the lake were long considered dumping ground for construction waste used. The quarter has 145 inhabitants. The Nieuwe Meer is generally divided into two areas on the north side: a nature area on the Anderlechtlaan and a recreation area (Dutch Recreatiegebied ).

The Oostoever is a residential area in Slotervaart and was built after 1995. It has around 1050 apartments and has three hamlets ( Buurtschapen ), each with its own character: Eiland, Lanenkwartier and Zuiveringspark . At the end of the 1980s, the first apartments were completed and in 2004 the district was completed. Nieuw Sloten became a residential area of Slotervaart / Overtoomse Veld in 1990 and has been part of the Nieuw West district since 2010 . In 1991 the first apartments were ready for occupancy and in 2004 the name was changed to Slotervaart .

District

The districts of Nieuw-West are:

Geuzenveld

Geuzenveld is a multicultural district with 15,720 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). Geuzenveld and Slotermeer emerged in the 1950s. The name Geuzenveld was named after a farm ( Boerenhofstede in Dutch ) on the Haarlemmerweg road . The municipal archives show that the Geuzenveld farm was first mentioned on December 6th, 1709. Geuzenveld is located in the so-called "Western Garden Cities" (Dutch Westelijke Tuinsteden ) of Amsterdam. According to tradition, the Geusen ( Geuzen in Dutch ) had a base there in 1573 at the time of the siege of Haarlem .

The current neighborhood was built between 1953 and 1959 and was divided into six small neighborhoods, each designed by a different architect. Today there are 32 schools and the “Sloterparkbad”, a swimming pool that was completed in 2001. Tram number 13 has been running here since 1974. The "Stichting Bijenpark Amsterdam" ( Foundation Bienenpark Amsterdam ) owns a "bee park" in Geuzenveld called "Nieuwe Bijenpark" (German New Bee Park ). The "Oude Bijenpark" (German old bee park ) is located in Slotervaart . The “Volkstuinpark” (literally: Volksgartenpark ) De Eendracht , which has existed since 1962, is located in Geuzenveld- Osdorp . In Geuzenveld / Slotermeer are the neighborhoods Spieringhorn, Slotermeer-Noordoost, Slotermeer-Zuidwest, Geuzenveld and Eendracht .

Slotermeer

Slotermeer (German Slotersee ), also called "Tuinstad Slotermeer" (German Garden City Slotermeer ), is located in the so-called "Western Garden Cities" (Dutch Westelijke Tuinsteden ) of Amsterdam. The name comes from the earlier lake Slotermeer which was drained in 1644.

Slotermeer

According to the general expansion plan (Dutch Algemeen uitbreidungsplan ) of 1935, the first plans were drawn up in 1939 for the later residential area. Due to the Second World War , the construction of the area did not materialize. In 1951, the first housing construction work began. The first apartments were completed on September 1, 1952, and today there are 32 schools and the "Sloterparkbad", a swimming pool that was completed in 2001. The “Gerbrandypark” is located in the middle of the district. Trams No. 7 and 13 run here. Slotermeer has been part of the Nieuw-West district since 2010. Slotermeer has 26,780 inhabitants. A daily market is on Monday on the Lambertus Zeiplein and from Tuesday to Saturday on the Plein '40 –'45 .
