history
As part of the general expansion plan ( Dutch Algemeen Uitbreidungsplan , AUP for short ) of 1935, it was decided that an expansion of the city of Amsterdam was also necessary in the southern part. In 1958, Buitenveldert began as a southern garden city ( Zuidelijke Tuinstad in Dutch ) and in 1959 the first apartments could be moved into.
Amstelpark is located on the eastern side of the district . The Floriade was held here in 1972 . The Gijsbrecht van Aemstelpark extends from west to east and forms an ecological connection between the Amsterdamse Bos and the Amstelpark. The quarter is characterized by many green spaces, detached villas and a relatively quiet residential area. The Free University of Amsterdam with an attached hospital and the “Gelderlandplein” shopping center are located in Buitenveldert, as well as a large tennis facility with indoor tennis court, a cemetery, a Christian school, a public library, a book market and the churches: St. Augustinus , De Goede Herder , Pelgrimskerk and De Buitenhof . The quarter has a large number of Jewish residents, with synagogues, their own schools, and shops, as well as many Japanese residents who also have their own shops and bars. Numerous companies were looking for apartments for their foreign employees and the good transport connections and the quiet location made Buitenveldert a suitable district.
Sights are the Riekermolen ( German Riekermühle ) as well as the statue of Rembrandt van Rijn nearby .
Citizens' initiatives are the Turkish group Aktief , the women's organization Interculturele Vrouwengroup , a homosexual initiative called Homogroep Zuid and the Moroccan group De Gouden Rivier .
Various public transport bus routes connect Buitenveldert with Amsterdam-Centrum , Amstelveen , Uithoorn and Aalsmeer and the trams (Dutch tram ) No. 16 (since 2003) and No. 24 (since 2006).
