Omval (also spelled De Omval ) is a headland and a district on the eastern side of the Amstel River in Amsterdam and had 735 inhabitants in 2017.

history

De Omval was originally a peninsula ( Dutch Schiereiland ) and belonged to the municipality of Ouder-Amstel . On January 1, 1921, the quarter became part of the municipality of Amsterdam. Between 1962 and 1980 there were many small businesses in the area that caused odor nuisance. A cocoa factory and a chemical company were known for the stink in the neighborhood. In addition, a vacuum cleaner factory and a shipyard were located there. These establishments no longer exist.

Omval is part of the Amstelstationbuurt in Amsterdam-Oost . This district (Dutch buurt ) consists of the districts Van der Kunbuurt, de Omval, HJE, Wenckebachweg, Amstelbusinesspark and Groenestaart with around 2020 inhabitants.

Mondriaantoren, Rembrandttoren and Breitnertorenl

At the extreme edge of the Amstelstationbuurt are the Van der Kunbuurt and de Omval . In contrast to the working-class district of Van der Kunbuurt , De Omval is a somewhat “more elegant” (chiquere) area with relatively expensive apartments.

In 1987 the Amsterdam City Council approved a plan to build three office buildings in de Omval bearing the names of well-known Dutch painters. These are the Rembrandt Tower, the Mondriaan Tower and the Breitner Tower. The Rembrandt Tower is the tallest building in Amsterdam.
