The Kadijken (literally: Kadeiche ) is a residential area on the eastern edge of downtown Amsterdam . Originally it was a shipbuilding area where many dock workers lived. The neighborhood got its name from the streets Hoogte and Laierter Kadijk . In January 2017, Kadijken had around 2,825 inhabitants. Kadijken is bounded in the south by the Entrepotdok, in the west by the Nieuwe Herengracht, in the north by the Nieuwevaart and in the east by the Sarphatiestraat. The Oostelijke Eilanden and Kadijken have a combined population of 12,985 (as of January 1, 2017).
