The Lastage, known today under the name Nieuwmarktbuurt (= "Neumarktviertel", a residential and nightlife district), was an important industrial and port area in Amsterdam in the 16th century. The load lay outside the Amsterdam city walls, east of the Geldersekade (on the Nieuwmarkt), but was protected from potential attackers by the Montelbaanstoren ("Montelbaansturm").

Around 1530 the right Boomssloot ( Gerader Boomsgraben ) and the Krom Boomssloot ( Krummer Boomsgraben ) were created. The former trenches got their names from the mayor Cornelis Pietersz. Boom (? –1579), which had the trenches turned into canals (Dutch: canals ). With this he established a connection for his shipyard on the Lastage to the Amsterdam IJ . In 1585, when a new fortress wall was built, the load came to rest within the city. Due to the rapid growth of the municipality, the urban area of Amsterdam was expanded again in 1591/1593. The island ( Eiland ) Uilenburg and the peninsulas Rapenburg and Marken (later Valkenburg), as well as the Lastage served as storage areas for wood, as a location for shipyards and blacksmiths. The first houses were built at the end of the 16th century.

Lastage took about 25 years to build and lasted from 1589 to 1614. The defensive system (city gate) Sint Anthoniespoort lost its function around 1600. This system was rebuilt in 1617/1618 to the Stadtwaage ( De Waag ), the space around the weigher became a market place.

Today's Neumarktviertel (formerly “Lastage”) is very close (about three minutes' walk) to the red light district De Wallen and Amsterdam's Chinatown , and is known as a nightlife district and tourist highlight.
