life and work

Cornelis Anthonisz. was born in Amsterdam around 1505. He was a grandson of Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen , who probably taught him to paint, and a cousin of Dirck Jacobsz. At first he went to sea and developed into a valued navigator. After his marriage in 1527 settled in Amsterdam. Here he began to make drawings, woodcuts, engravings and paintings. He was also active in public affairs, such as a councilor in 1547.

In 1538 he painted the painting Vogelfluchtkaart (bird flight map) on behalf of the city as a gift for Emperor Charles V , the first complete map of Amsterdam from a bird's eye view. Many of the buildings in the picture are still preserved today. Jan Micker copied this picture more than 100 years later and added the shadows of clouds to it. Today the painting is in the Amsterdam Museum .

Cornelis Anthonisz. is best known for his woodcuts, especially the bird's eye view of Amsterdam from 1544, printed in 12 blocks of wood. This cityscape was very popular and was copied and duplicated in various versions well into the 17th century. The original was damaged in a fire in Amsterdam City Hall in 1632 and could not be restored until 1932. According to the legend on the cityscape, Cornelis Anthonisz lived. behind the Nieuwe Kerk with a writing hand as a sign on the house, which was considered a distinguishing feature for scribes, booksellers and cartographers. In the legend, his name is given as Cornelis Anthoniszoon.

He also created the Caerte van Oostlant (map of Ostland), a map of the North and Baltic Seas with the bordering coastal regions from the Netherlands to the Baltic States with the southern parts of Norway and Sweden. It is the oldest printed nautical map of Northern Europe. The wood cutter was Arnold Nicolai from Antwerp .

His works include allegorical prints, including De trap of Levens (The stairs of life), one of the first representations of a secured life stairs , in which the course is symbolized human life. The course of life is shown in the form of ascending and descending steps around the gate-shaped structure, with the climax of life falling on the fifth decade.

He also made several oil paintings of leading figures. Only two of these paintings, which are attributed to him, have survived : Braspenningsmaaltijd (Braspenningsmahlzeit), a group picture of a rifle guild at a banquet from 1533 and a portrait of Reinoud III. van Brederode , Lord of Brederode and Vianen, Hereditary Count of Utrecht.
