Dirck Jacobsz.
Dirck Jacobsz. (* around 1497 ; † 1567 ) was a painter of the Dutch Renaissance . Jacobsz. is the abbreviation of Jacobszoon , which translated means son of Jacob . The exact place of birth is not known, but it is known that he grew up in Amsterdam .
Life
Jacobsz. was born into a family of painters and learned painting from his father, Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen . During this time he also met the Amsterdam painter Jan van Scorel , with whom he was to be a lifelong friend and whose mannerism strongly influenced him.
He was one of the first painters to specialize in portraits. His portrait of Pompey Occo is considered to be the first Renaissance portrait by an Amsterdam painter. Jacobsz. often used objects in his pictures that indicate the transience of life, such as skulls or hourglasses. In his last years his fame was overshadowed by the court painter of the Spanish Netherlands, Anthonie Mor from Utrecht.
A group portrait of a rifle guild painted in 1529 is considered his most important work. It was the first army portrait in Dutch history. As a result, group portraits from rifle guilds became a specialty of Dutch painters.
