life and work

Jan Mickers year of birth is not certain. According to his own statements, he was 26 years old in 1626 and over 33 years old in 1631. The years between 1598 and 1600 can therefore be considered as the year of birth. On July 16, 1626, he became engaged to Annetie Pieters. His brother Barent Micker (1615–87) was married to Lijsbeth, the youngest sister of Jan Baptist Weenix . In 1653 he lived on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam opposite the Noorderkerk in a house called t Wapen van Amsterdam . At the end of his life he lived on Lindengracht in the Jordaan district . His tomb is in the Noorderkerk, where he was buried on April 12 or 14, 1664.

Jan Micker worked as a painter from 1618 until his death. He was the first teacher of Jan Baptist Weenix and painted the staffage in paintings by Jan Fransz Dammeroen , Hans Jurriaensz van Baden and Joachim Govertsz Camphuysen . His most famous painting is Vogelvlucht , which shows Amsterdam from a bird's eye view. The picture was taken around 1652 and is now in the Amsterdam Museum . A painting by Cornelis Anthonisz served as a template . from 1538. So the painting does not show the topology of Amsterdam around 1652. At this point in time the city had already been expanded to the west by the three canals Herengracht , Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht and the Jordaan district.
